Dolphin S50 above ground pool cleaner review: Specs, features, pros & cons

Dolphin s50

Dolphin S50 review

The Dolphin S50 Pool Cleaner was designed by Maytronics, and is an entry level robotic pool cleaner designed only for above-ground pools up to 30ft in length, much like the Dolphin E10. The Dolphin S50 takes 1.5 hours to complete a cleaning cycle, and is only capable of cleaning the floor of your in-ground pool.

The Dolphin S50 Pool Cleaner has a compact lightweight design, and also features a quick water release system just like the Dolphin S300 pool cleaner that removes any excess water from the cleaner while you’re removing it from the pool, making it easy to transport.

To help with its navigation around the pool the Dolphin S50 uses it patented CleverClean Technology which allows it to map out the most efficient path to take while performing a clean. This not only saves you time, but money as well.

The Maytronics Dolphin S50 uses a well sized, easily accessed top-loaded filter basket. This basket has fine filters for large debris, and things like bugs, stones, and sand. However if you want it to be able to filter micro particles like the Dolphin S200, then a ultra-fine filter kit can be purchased for an added cost.

Unlike many other Dolphin models, the Dolphin S50 doesn’t use an anti-tangle cable but due to the fact its cord isn’t very long this isn’t much of an issue.

If you’re looking to purchase the Dolphin S50 it will cost you around $619.00, and will need to be bought through your local Dolphin supplier.

Pros:

  • Affordable
  • Efficient at cleaning
  • Easy to access filter
  • 2 year warranty
  • Lightweight
  • CleverClean Navigation

Cons:

  • No anti tangle cable
  • No weekly timer

Dolphin s50 pool cleaner key features

CleverClean Navigation

CleverClean technology allows the Dolphin S50 Pool Cleaner to map out the optimal path to take when cleaning your pool, allowing for a very efficient clean. It also ensures that the Dolphin S50 is performing a thorough clean, making sure no spots are missed, or cleaned twice. This feature also allow the S50 to detect objects in its path and navigate around them which prevents it from becoming stuck.

One touch operation

The Dolphin S50 was definitely designed with simplicity in mind much like the Dolphin Escape pool cleaner, requiring no connection to a skimmer, or pump unlike pressure side, or suction pool cleaners. This makes it a great choice for first time users of a robotic cleaner. Simply plug it into a designated power source, hit the on button, and watch the Dolphin S50 get to work.

Top loaded filters

This is another area where the Dolphin S50 is great with its simplicity. The filters are easily accessed through the top of the cleaner. Simply slide the filter out, hose off any stuck on debris, and you’re good to go. If you’re after a pool cleaner with an extra large filter capacity then I’d recommend checking out the Dolphin Sigma.

Quick water release

If you’ve owned an automatic pool cleaner before, then you’ll know that removing it from the water can be a tricky task. Not only are they heavy, but they can store water in them making them extra hard to remove. Not the Dolphin S50 Pool Cleaner though. Its quick water release features allows excess water to be drained through a flap at the bottom of it while it’s being removed from the pool, making a sometimes difficult task effortless.

If you want to take simplicity even further the Dolphin robot M600 will even return to the side of the pool once its cleaning cycle has finished.

Dolphin S50 pool cleaner user reviews

When checking out reviews for the Maytronics Dolphin S50, it was clear to see there were mixed opinions about how good it really was. one of the main positive point was made in relation to how lightweight and easy to transport the Dolphin S 50 was.

Users also mentioned they were impressed with how effectively the Dolphin S50 was able to clean the pools floor, and how it was able to clean the majority of debris it came in contact with.

Some negative points users mentioned was the fact that it did not have an anti-tangle swivel cable, this led to the Dolphin S50 pool cleaner occasionally becoming tangle around its own cord, which meant it was not fully reliable to be left to clean unsupervised.

People also mentioned they were a bit disappointed that it did not have a weekly timer, a feature many of the other Dolphin above-ground pool cleaners had.

Dolphin S50 summary

For me, I feel like the Dolphin S50 is an alright above-ground pool cleaner. It is able to do the basics well, and is pretty versatile when it comes to the different types of debris it can handle. I like the quick release water feature that compliments its lightweight design well, making it easy to remove and transport for anyone.

There were some aspects of the Dolphin S50 pool cleaner that let me down however.

And these were the fact it is unreliable when it comes to being left to clean unsupervised due to it not using an anti-tangle cable, and the fact that it did not have a weekly timer function. This made it a more labour intensive above ground pool cleaner to own compared to other robotic pool cleaners.

It’s for these reasons I feel like there are better alternative for above-ground pools that can be purchased for a similar price.

  1. My Dolphin is popping wheelies when going forward, pool store said to adjust the float closer to cleaner, how do I adjust the float??

    1. Hey Kathy, there are a few different reasons why your Dolphin may be popping wheelies. Check out this troubleshooting guide to see if you can find the solution.

My Dolphin is “popping a wheelie” or lifting; Does not make contact with the floor:

      • Models with a single roller brush will “pop wheelies” when changing directions – this is normal.
      • After turning, if the Dolphin does not return to the floor, check that the filters are not dirty or clogged.
(Although filters may look clean, small particulates can dry in the filter material and clog the pores).
      • Make sure the filters, cartridges or bag are properly installed – snug, with no visible gaps and filter panels are
      snapped securely in place.
      • If your unit has a filter bag – make sure the elastic of the bag is snug against the bottom lid and that it is over
the plastic lip on the lid and no gaps are visible.
      • Make sure you allow the foam climbing rings to become fully saturated before starting your cycle – usually this
      takes 10-20 minutes.
      > If these rings are not allowed to become absorbent, they can remain hard and stiff. This can prevent
good suction and keep the brushes from contacting the pool’s surface.
